Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
in San Diego - Mira Mesa

More Than a Traditional Cleaning

Great hygiene starts by understanding what needs attention. Bacterial biofilm is a sticky, often invisible film that collects on teeth and around restorations, brackets, and wires. Over time, unmanaged biofilm can contribute to tooth decay and gum inflammation.

Many professional cleanings focus on removing plaque, tartar, and stains through scaling and polishing. Those methods remain important. Guided Biofilm Therapy adds a more visual, targeted step: we disclose biofilm so you can see it, then use EMS AIRFLOW technology to help remove it from clinically appropriate surfaces. We still use traditional instruments whenever calculus or other deposits require them.

What Makes Guided Biofilm Therapy Different?

See It. Understand It. Clean It.

What makes GBT different is not simply the equipment—it is the sequence of care. By making bacterial biofilm visible, we can explain the areas that deserve more attention, guide cleaning, and give you practical advice for maintaining your results at home.

  • Disclose: A temporary colored dye helps show where biofilm remains, including around brackets and gumlines.
  • Clean: EMS AIRFLOW uses a controlled stream of air, water, and fine powder to help remove biofilm and certain surface stains.
  • Complete the care: Additional scaling or periodontal instruments are used as needed to remove hard deposits or treat your specific condition.
  • Personalize: We review the results and recommend home-care techniques that fit your smile.

Braces and Wires? GBT Makes Hygiene Easier.

Orthodontic brackets and fixed wires create small areas that are difficult to brush and floss thoroughly. AIRFLOW can help our team reach around these appliances without routinely removing the archwires or brackets for biofilm removal. That means a more convenient professional hygiene visit while you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist may still need to remove or adjust components for other reasons.

For More Than Just Natural Teeth

GBT techniques can also be adapted to patients with crowns, suitable dental restorations, implant-supported prostheses, and other areas needing careful maintenance. We select the appropriate instruments and methods based on your dental health.

What You Can't See Matters

Biofilm is not the same thing as tartar. Biofilm is a soft bacterial layer that can develop even when teeth look clean. Tartar is mineralized buildup that requires scaling. GBT helps our team see and manage biofilm, while calculus removal and periodontal treatment remain part of your hygiene care when indicated.

Removing surface stains is also different from whitening the natural shade of teeth. For patients interested in changing tooth color, ask us about KöR Whitening.

Experience a More Thoughtful Hygiene Visit

A first-visit experience worth looking forward to. New patients experience Guided Biofilm Therapy as part of their initial hygiene appointment at Flawless Dental Studio.

For subsequent hygiene appointments, our clinical team reviews your needs and discusses appropriate options with you in person. You can always expect a personalized recommendation rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GBT the same as a regular cleaning?
GBT builds on established professional hygiene by adding biofilm disclosure and a targeted AIRFLOW step. Standard scaling and other instruments may still be used when clinically necessary.

Do you have to remove braces or archwires?
For routine biofilm removal around fixed brackets, AIRFLOW can generally be used without removing the wires or brackets. We coordinate with your orthodontic care needs when exceptions arise.

Is it comfortable?
Many patients appreciate the powder-and-water approach. Sensitivity and comfort vary, and we tailor the procedure to each patient.

Will AIRFLOW whiten my teeth?
AIRFLOW can help remove certain external stains, but it does not replace professional bleaching when a lighter tooth shade is desired.

Is GBT a replacement for deep cleaning?
No. If scaling and root planing or periodontal therapy is indicated, our team will recommend the appropriate treatment.

Why Patients Appreciate Guided Biofilm Therapy

See What Brushing Misses

Biofilm disclosing helps reveal areas that deserve special attention. Instead of guessing where plaque may be hiding, our team can show you what we see and provide personalized home-care guidance.

Gentle, Technology-Driven Care

EMS AIRFLOW uses a controlled combination of air, water, and fine powder to help remove biofilm and certain surface stains. Many patients appreciate this approach; comfort and treatment needs vary individually.

Designed for Braces and Dental Work

GBT can help us clean hard-to-reach surfaces around fixed braces, crowns, and implant restorations. For routine biofilm removal with AIRFLOW around brackets, orthodontic wires typically do not need to be removed.

How Your Guided Hygiene Visit Works

Step 1 — Assess, Disclose & Educate

We assess your teeth, gums and areas that may need extra attention. Biofilm disclosing solution highlights plaque, helping you see where it collects and how to improve home care.

Step 2 — AIRFLOW & Targeted Cleaning

We use EMS AIRFLOW technology to help remove disclosed biofilm and certain surface stains from appropriate areas, including around fixed braces. When calculus or other deposits are present, additional scaling or periodontal instrumentation may be needed.

Step 3 — Check, Protect & Maintain

We check your results, address any remaining deposits as indicated, and discuss personalized prevention. New patients experience GBT at their initial hygiene appointment, with follow-up options discussed with our team in person.

GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY

See What Makes GBT Different

Dental biofilm can remain even on teeth that look clean. Disclosing dye reveals plaque so we can explain what we see, target the areas that need attention, and offer personalized brushing and flossing guidance.

See It. Understand It. Clean It.

Biofilm disclosure adds a visual step to preventive care. EMS AIRFLOW technology helps remove biofilm and certain surface stains with a controlled air-water-powder stream. Traditional scaling remains part of treatment whenever hard deposits need removal.

Technology That Makes a Difference

GBT is a structured approach focused on visibility, precision, patient education, and the right hygiene instruments for each individual. It complements—not replaces—necessary periodontal treatment and scaling.

CLEANINGS WITH FIXED BRACES

Brackets and Wires? We Can Work Around Them.

Orthodontic brackets and archwires create hard-to-reach areas. AIRFLOW can remove biofilm around these fixed appliances, generally without removing archwires for routine biofilm cleaning. Your care team may use other instrumentation when appropriate.
